Dr. King's Message Still Resonates

A friend posted this quote on Facebook tonight from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

So appropriate for the events of the last 24 hours. As I watched the coverage last night of people celebrating in front of the White House, I couldn't help but think about the day after the September 11 attacks. Extremists were celebrating in the streets in the Middle East. How sad that we Americans have no more class than that. Osama Bin Laden was a monster, but why do we celebrate his death? He doesn't deserve to be acknowledged in any way, even in death.

The fact remains that there are still many of his ilk waiting for their chance to avenge his death on our soil. There is nothing to celebrate, and those who celebrate only stir the blood or our enemies. "Hate cannot drive out hate..."

I don't think our total "just ignore" of his death would have had any less effect on his followers to want to avenge and kill as many of us as they can. I think after all the needless deaths WE caused "in search" of this enemy, the swith up to Iraq and all THOSE deaths, celebrating Bin Laden's death is a release for many military and their families, 9-11 survivors and the families of those killed. Better to get drunk, celebrating a stupid ball game and DUI a carload of kids to death? Shall we do away with the 4th of July? I think people were celebrating that the USA could actually get something done when it comes to intelligence. We have been sorely failing in that area for many years. The rest got the revenge they wanted---revenge is never the right road and they will learn that lesson.

It is sad that King's voice was stilled so prematurely. Thanks for that quote.

Hi,
I agree with you, hate can't drive out hate and never will, it seems to just create more hate.

So far there have been 122,483 deaths due to the invasion of Iraq.

That is alot of potental hate, the whole situation is almost too horrible to contemplate.

We will need alot of love to make it better.

Love,
Herrad

New work by Jenkins and McBride on King on Bonhoeffer. DB rode right in front on my MOther's home in 1931 in NE Alabama on old HWY 11. See Charles Marsh effort in the collection above.
Also check my recent comment on Ryan Hale's blog; good summer reading for you.
Hope things otherwise are well.
