North Georgia in Crisis

This week North Georgia faced a crisis of mammoth to speak. The remains of Bigfoot were found. But, alas, it wasn't Bigfoot, but a costume in a freezer surrounded by apparent earthen particles, purportedly from its final resting place.

The news media immediately went into crisis mode with special reports and breaking news. The Internet buzzed with news articles, and controversy surrounded the two men, one a metro Atlanta cop, who perpetrated this monster hoax on poor, unsuspecting Bigfoot hunters and lovers. Searching for Bigfoot, Inc. in California, which had payed the two upwards of fifty thousand dollars(you read it right, $50,000)for "the body," filed a lawsuit to recover their money. A spokesperson for the organization said, “If this was a joke, it was very methodical and thought-out."

The police officer, on leave after being shot in the line of duty, was fired by his department after it was inundated by phone calls and emails about the Bigfoot find. According to the Atlanta Journal, which has provided comprehensive coverage of this story:

"As soon as he heard Whitton’s Bigfoot was a big fake, “I terminated him,” Police Chief Jeffrey Turner said Tuesday.

“He’s disgraced himself, he’s an embarrassment to the Clayton County Police Department, his credibility and integrity as an officer is gone, and I have no use for him,” Turner said. “His behavior is unbecoming of that of a police officer."'

I am certainly glad that someone took decisive action on this issue. Chief Turner has shown that he can made a decision and follow through. Presidential material, I say. The experience it takes to be in the oval office, when that call comes in on the red phone at three a.m.

Chief Turner has it well in hand, but he can't do it all. The very thought of someone brazen enough to do such a dastardly deed chills me to the bone. To think that right here in our midst there are two men, one an officer of the law, who preyed upon innocent and unsuspecting Americans. It's enough to make me sick to my stomach.

Once they get their phone system back up after all those hacked phone calls to the Middle East and Asia, I hope that Homeland Security will get involved, so that we will not again be bothered by such terrorist activity. Make us safe again President Bush, please make us safe! Who knows what danger lurks in the minds of men.

China Olympics

As an avid Olympics watcher, I find my thoughts returning to the Cold War years, when the Soviet Block countries fielded full time "professional" athletes with whom the US athletes had trouble competing. The Soviet judges and referees would often favor their athletes to the detriment of U.S. athletes, especially.

Fast forward to the present. We see Chinese gymnasts, who are obviously under the required age. They are trained by the government from the age of three in "athletic mills," where they are kept from their families and required to train long hours each day. All this in an effort to dominate and make the world think they are the best and most powerful.

The parallels in judging aren't the same, but we see Chinese gymnasts being favored by the judges, even when they perform badly. The commentators blame it on poorly prepared judges, but one has to wonder, given the U.S. reputation around the world, and the Chinese rising star. These judges are taken by the spectacle of it all, and the obvious Chinese attempts to dazzle the world into thinking that they are modern and tolerant. We know that they are still very much a totalitarian regime with capitalist tendencies, but, so often, others are easily fooled.

At any rate, the Olympic parallels between the "old days" and the present are very "deja vu." Now Russia is flexing its muscles again and no one is ready to confront them militarily, and they know it. I wonder about the politics of the next Olympics and who will be the major players.

The Real (Rich)John McCain

"The REAL McCain is a multimillionaire who owns ten luxurious homes. The REAL McCain backs President Bush's tax cuts for big corporations. The REAL McCain empathizes only with the interests of our nation's wealthy minority, not its money-strapped majority. But far too many are buying into McCain's deceit because the corporate press won't present the whole picture, so we created this video to educate the public about the REAL McCain."

Remember this. McCain didn't work for this wealth. He married into it after an extramarital relationship with his current wife Cindy Hensley, the rich beer heiress. His first wife was seriously injured in an automobile accident while he was a POW. She refused to allow this information to be sent to him, for she feared what it might do to his morale. When he returned to find her on crutches and overweight, he began to cheat on her, eventually finding Cindy Hensley to cavort with. He married her two months after his divorce. After all she was wealthy with good political connections, so why not go for it? So far it has worked well for him.

Yet Another McCain "MIs-speak"

Do I have to say more? The first serious international crisis since the Cold War? What is it with this man? Is he taking the voters, to paraphase P.T. Barnum, as suckers born every minute, or is he trying to imitate his hero and the current Republican Deity, Ronald Reagan? Then again, is it something much more serious?
If he is, indeed, suffering from old age, brought on more quickly by the tortuous years spent in a North Vietnamese prison, I shudder to think what his days as a president might be like. If, heaven help us, he were to win and then have someone like Rev. Mike "let's change the Constitution to be more like the Bible" Huckabee as vice president, I can't imagine the consequences.
