A great blog which I regularly read, Great Minds Like Me, today, posted an open letter to the President from a former Republican and the son of an evangelical leader in which he advises the President to abandon his bipartisan outreach and leave the Republicans behind. The Republican Party at the moment is the party of obstructionism. It has no goals other than to try to discredit the current administration. There is a total lack of a desire for bipartisanship. It a party of mean spirited, hate filled people, who want to return this country to the Dark Ages, where it would be run by a Taliban-like group of neo-cons and fundamentalist Christians.
It is time for the President to forget his bipartisan thinking. During the recent stimulus bill debate, he spent entirely too much time trying to court the sour faced Boehner and his equally contemptible associate, McConnell. McCain, the self-styled bipartisan thinker, showed his true colors by complaining that the Republicans weren't included, even though the President met with them on more than one occasion. The President played into their hands and made himself appear weak, because they refused to enter into a good faith discussion.
The Democrats have the votes. The stimulus package passed with the votes of the three Republicans, who are, apparently, the only forward thinking members of that party in Congress, maybe in the entire country. I don't know how well the package will work, but I was quite amazed and amused to listen to the Republicans rant about the "out of control spending" in the bill, when they were responsible for the biggest spending administration in the history of the country. The underlying corruption within that spending is amazing. We are just now beginning to learn the depth of corruption in spending in Iraq.
The President should simply forget his campaign promise. After seeing the Republicans show their true colors the public will understand. Bipartisanship will not work with this group of Neanderthals. Their mouth pieces in the form of Hannity, Limbaugh, and the other Cro-Mangnons will continue to spew their hatred and try to keep the base energized. Let them continue to incite, while the remainder of the country moves forward and leaves the nightmare of Bush and his corrupt minions behind. If they are marginalized and left behind, they will find themselves much like Eunuchs in a Roman brothel. All dressed up, but nothing to do.

A fun idea, but we are only as strong as our weakest link. We must be better than they were and not sink to their level. IMHO
Ralph,
The Republican party is not the party of obstructionism. For a change, they (except for 3 RINO's) found some backbone & are doing the right thing. First time in probably 20 years. This economic stimulus bill has almost nothing to do with the economy. All but about 7% of it is nothing but pork and earmarks. It's about time some of the Republicans stopped trying to appease everyone else (which hasn't worked - it's always been the Democrats' way or no way)& do what they were elected to do. If I were in Congress, I wouldn't have voted for it either, if for no other reason that no one was given the opportunity to read it. The President put a lot of pressure on Congress to pass it without reading it. That's a real problem, & there should be a Constitutional amendment prohibiting Congress from voting on ANYTHING without everyone having been given ample opportunity to read the legislation.
There may not be a Democratic majority in Congress for long. According to a Rasmussen poll taken after the bill passed, roughly a third of Americans voters said they would most likely NOT vote for those who voted for the economic stimulus plan, so the public DOES understand.
Dirk
THE FIRST AMENDMENT, NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT II
http://tsalagiman2.blogspot.com/
Time will tell Dirk. Time will tell. Neither of us has read it, so we really don't know everything that is in it. Republicans voted against it because it was a Democratic bill. I once had a Republican GA state legislator tell me he couldn't vote for the annual budget even though there were some good things in it for his district, because it was a Democratic budget. Great rep, huh? He is now a major player in the legislature.
Oh, and the Republicans have never shoved bills down our throats no one had time to read? Isn't that the poller who said Mccain would win? Let me guess, Dirk, you make over $50,000/year. Dems are cleaning up the Republican MESS.
Guess which party has the foul mouthed, mean spirited demonstrators and disgusting web sites, promotes porn, promotes homosexuality, promotes abortion. Which party wants the name of Jesus to NOT be mentioned for fear of offending......the one I used to belong to.....Democrat. mom2
Good line about the eunuchs in the brothel.
But kidding aside, Hannity, Limbaugh, Dobbs etc are insidious bunch; and folks ought to wise up to what Roger Ailes is about; and it ain't the best of Jeffersonian and Lincoln Democracy.
On another note, thanks for your recent post on my blog. I may take it down for a few days to lower the tension levels in the local berg; but if I do most likely will have it back up in ten days or so if not sooner.
You are lying mom2. I challenge you to show me where the Democratic Party promotes porn, abortion, homosexuality (I have never seen anywhere, where anyone "promotes" homosexuality.) and has disgusting web sites. Where is the disgusting website(s) that the Democratic Party maintains? I also challenge you to show me where the Democratic Party says that it fears mentioning Jesus' name. The tone of your comment places you in the mean spirited, hate filled category that I am writing about. Don't talk to me about being a Christian when you write something like that. You need to go back and do some heavy praying soon or that end time that you are always talking about is going to catch you napping.
Fox, it's a crying shame that you feel the need to do that because you expressed your opinion.
GMM, I suggest you take the same advice you gave to me. While you are at it, open your blinded eyes and deaf ears. Talk about hate, read your above post with its accusations. I'm sure I am not even in the middle class by financial measurements, but I believe the Bible prophecies are being fulfilled right NOW and getting angry with our fellow believers over politics is not the answer. I'm 69 years old and was raised in a home by 2 lifelong Democrats and was one myself until Carter ran for his second term. I no longer look to politicians (Il. politicians will cure one of that), I pray that Christians everywhere will seek the Lord, the only answer. mom2
P.S. Look at Obama's appointment for Deputy Attorney General. mom2
Poor dear mom2, what are you going to do when all your Bible prophesies don't pan out? Are you going to try to figure out some more for on down the road? You folks have been prophesying the end of the world for the last 2000 + years. Some of you have committed suicide, thinking the end was here. As far as Ogden is concerned, he's from the same law firm, WilmerHale, as the McCain campaign's chief counsel,Todd R. Steggerda. He is a lawyer who specializes in free speech cases and is quite well respected in the legal world, apparently. Oh yeah, and all the right wing freaks don't like him because he has represented some of their favorite sex peddlers. They always keep up with these people and know all of their publications, etc, I presume because they read them all. You have to do that, you know, in order to "keep up with them." Personally, I'm not familiar with all that crap, because I don't read it. You all know more about it that I do.
